This is probably the only photo that I know of that exists of my grandmother, Dorothy Strader Scott, with her siblings and parents. That’s her–well half of her– way down in the lower edge of the photo, just above the words “HERE I AM”. Do you see her? Look closely! I didn’t see her at first either.

The folks labelled “Ma” and “Dad” are obvious, that’s Lucy and Clarence. But let’s elaborate on who the brothers and sisters are. Starting on the left, that’s Larry, born in 1918. “Sister” in the background is Helen, born in 1910. She was only a year and a half older that my grandmother, “Dot”. Cuddled next to Ma is the baby of the family, Lucille, born in 1920. She also went by Lucy. And in between Ma and Dad is Clarence, also known as Bud, born 1915. I don’t know who the other two, unlabelled people are in the photo.

As a child, I spent many summers on the beaches of Lake Erie with my grandmother. She often spoke of the many times as a young girl, that she and her family would visit the shores of New Jersey. She loved the sand, surf and water.
