This is one of my favorite photographs of Lucy Strader, my great-grandmother. She looks so happy in this photograph with her big smile and sparkling eyes. I’m sure part of the reason she looks this way is because she’s with her son, “Bud”. His given name was Clarence, named after his father, and his father’s father. I assume he was always known as Bud though, as I have never seen him referenced as Clarence in any family photograph.
I have no idea where this photo was taken or when. Perhaps they were together in the springtime for Easter? There are no hints except for the bare trees in the background and Lucy’s pearl necklace and earrings. Isn’t she just precious wearing her best bauble? I imagine they were together to celebrate the springtime holiday. Who knows.
My great-grandmother was never one to speak loudly or laugh out loud. So to see her broad smile and obvious delight in this photograph reminds me of just how special it is to spend time with a son that lives far away.
