These are my great-grandparents, Clarence and Lucy Strader. He died in 1943 at the age of 55 of a burst appendix while staying in a hotel in New York. They found him deceased in his room. As he appears to be older in this photo, I assume he probably died shortly after it was taken.
Clarence was a travelling salesman of fine artwork and furniture. He moved his family around a lot from New Jersey (my grandmother Dorothy was born in Patterson, NJ) to Massachusetts, to Pennsylvania to Cleveland, Ohio. There are many beautiful artifacts in the family of paintings, vases, and furniture that were handed down through the generations. There is also family lore that he had a “roving eye”, which great-grandma ignored.
My great-grandmother, Lucy went on to live well into her 90’s. I remember her fondly as a quiet, regal sort of woman.
