This dapper looking group of men are Joseph Marous, my great-grandfather (seated), and four of his five sons. They are (left to right), Albert (my grandfather), John, Joseph Jr., and James. Frank, the youngest son is not shown in this photo.
I obtained this photo from my Aunt Dorothy Stettenfeld. When she gave it to me, she explained that she thought the photo was taken as part of the initiation of some kind of local social club. Frank was excluded at the time because he was too young to participate. But she wasn’t sure about the reason behind the photograph.
You’ll notice that James, the man on the right is wearing a wedding band. He married Mona Sayle on April 12, 1917. However, if this photo was taken after that date, that would make my grandfather, who was born in 1890, 27 years old. Plus, if this photo was taken in 1917 or later, Frank, the youngest son, most likely would have been included. Compared to other photo’s of my grandfather around this time, he looks much younger than that in this photo. So, I’m really not sure exactly when this photo was taken. Let’s just say it was sometime between 1907 and 1917.
